Memory Rock

The design concept for this stunning, luxury home centres on the intention to create a space where the boundaries between inside and out can be all but dissolved.  This was achieved by designing wide expanses of the ground floor building envelope in sliding glass doors, enabling full, open connection between interior and exterior.

The sliding door solution for this 313m2 home design features 29 sliding panels, with more than 60 linear metres of the ground floor building envelope completed in fixed or sliding glass.  Each section of sliding doors is designed to stack in either direction, enabling flexibility in configuration and functionality.  When open, the doors stack away dissolving the line between inside and out, and when closed the use of full height, large scale panels provide only minimal disruption to the landscape and views beyond.

APL’s Magnum series commercial suite sliding doors were used throughout the lower levels, catering to the high wind zone while enabling larger spans than can be achieved with residential products. Upstairs, the master bedroom features an overwall Magnum Series sliding window, at 2.6 x 2.6m, with the overwall slider passing through a steel feature shroud.

Achieving the clean, simplistic outcome specified by this architectural design required strong technical competence in planning and detailing the aluminium joinery solution.  As well as collaborating with builder and architect on project detailing, the Origin Residential team produced full shop drawings.

The home is double glazed throughout, and the APL Magnum suite operates on an interlocker system which provides greater flexibility for design, while also ensuring air tightness for heat retention when all sliders are closed.

This remarkable project won the 2022 Residential Project Awards for its category at the NZ Window and Glass Awards.
